The UW Speech and Hearing Clinic provides specialized services and holistic care for individuals experiencing symptoms and changes in communication and cognition following concussion (mild traumatic brain injury).
Medical providers may describe a concussion as a “mild” brain injury (mTBI) because concussions are usually not life-threatening. Even so, the effects of a concussion can be serious. Symptoms of a concussion can be acute and resolve quickly, while others experience persistent changes and difficulties for days, weeks or months following the injury. Early education and intervention are crucial for brain healing and resolving symptoms.
What We Offer
Services are individualized and may include:
- Education on concussion recovery and management of symptoms in daily life
- Support for attention, memory, and processing speed
- Strategies for organization and task management
- Communication and self-advocacy strategies for school, work, and social settings
- Return-to-learn and return-to-work counseling and strategies
- Recommendations on outside referrals and collaboration with other providers
Our Approach
Following a comprehensive clinical interview, we use a functional, recovery-focused approach that emphasizes returning to everyday activities through education, counseling, and coaching. Therapy focuses on practical strategies that support the individual’s demands and promotes confidence and independence.
Who May Benefit
Concussion services may be helpful for individuals who:
- Have sustained a recent or past concussion, or have had multiple concussions

- Have difficulty returning to school, work, social or daily routines
Scheduling/Booking
After booking an appointment online, you will receive a confirmation of your appointment through email. You will also receive a separate email from the UWSHC’s medical documentation platform, CounselEAR. You must complete the intake forms sent to you after booking your appointment at least 24 hours before your appointment.
Appointment Availability
UWSHC’s Concussion Services run during the university calendar dates for each semester, and available appointments in the booking link reflect this. Sessions are not available during interim dates between semesters; however, urgent requests during that time can be emailed to Kim Caul at concussion@csd.wisc.edu.
In order for the best care to be provided, it is recommended that patients interested in receiving services have had recent or past medical attention related to their concussion prior to scheduling a session. Attendance and involvement of loved ones or people closely connected to the patient are welcome and recommended, as indicated by the patient.
Cost and Individual Session Length
Our clinic does not currently bill insurance carriers. The concussion services fees are as follows:
- University Students: $45/session
- Community Members: $60/session
Payment is due upon arrival at the clinic on the appointment date.
Sessions will last 1-2 hours, depending on the patient’s symptoms and needs. All patients should block 2 hours for their appointment. Cost is based on meeting patient needs within a 2-hour blocked session time rather than the exact minutes of services delivered.
