Aphasia is a communication disorder that can occur after a stroke or brain injury, affecting a person’s ability to speak, understand language, read, or write. It does not affect intelligence, but it can impact communication and participation in daily life.
The UW Speech and Hearing Clinic provides evaluation and treatment for individuals with aphasia, with a focus on supporting meaningful communication in real-world settings.
What We Offer
Our services are individualized and may include:
- Strategies to improve speaking, understanding, reading, and writing
- Practice for everyday communication situations (e.g., conversations, phone calls, appointments)
- Support for returning to work, school, or community activities
- Communication partner training for family members and caregivers
We also offer opportunities for supported conversation and group interaction, helping individuals build confidence and connection.
