Former clinical faculty member Joan Kwiatkowski, M.A., CCC-SLP, passed away on January 9, 2025.

Joan Kwiatkowski joined the UW-Madison in 1971 as a clinical faculty member in Communicative Disorders (now Communication Sciences and Disorders). During her four-decade career she became internationally recognized for her clinical, academic and research work in the fields of phonology and fluency. Joan retired from the department in 2013 as an Emeritus Clinical Professor.

During her time at UW-Madison, Joan worked tirelessly as an expert in childhood speech sound disorders, producing many scholarly publications and presentations. She worked clinically at the UW Speech and Hearing Clinic (UWSHC) and the Waisman Center, focusing on the treatment of children’s speech delays, stuttering, and other fluency disorders. She also contributed for 30+ years as an editorial consultant for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) journal Language Speech and Hearing Services in Schools. Ms. Kwiatkowski also worked as the Co-Chair of the Political Action Committee (PAC) of the Wisconsin Speech-Language-Hearing Association, where she was instrumental in developing the association’s professional lobbying activities. Joan was elected as a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 2001 for her professional contributions in research and teaching.

Joan Kwiatkowski continued her impact in the Campus community as a member of the Bascom Hill Society.
