Former clinical faculty member Ted Tweed, M.A., CCC-A, passed away on January 12, 2025.
Ted served in the United States Army after college and was very proud to be a serviceman and veteran. Following the Army, he completed a Masters Degree at the University of Iowa in Audiology where he then worked until 1968. He joined the Department of Communicative Disorders (now the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders) in 1968 as a clinical instructor and faculty member, where he was the director of the Hearing Clinic (now part of the UW Speech and Hearing Clinic).
During his time at UW-Madison, Ted led important programs such as the department’s hearing-aid dispensing program, Head-Start hearing screenings, State Patrol hearing screenings, and the Farm Progress Days Hearing Conservation Program. He retired from the Department in 1992 and kept his love of helping those with hearing loss alive through private practice, as a consultant in audiology to the Episense Research Program (Beaver Dam Studies), and emeritus faculty status at the UW. Ted was highly respected by his colleagues for his dependability, practical nature, and commitment to hard work. He was a positive influence in the lives of countless audiology students.
Family and community were always a priority in Ted’s life. He found a love of running, completed many races including multiple marathons, and was a founder of the Waunafest Run in 1979 where he served as its race director for 18 years. In 2023 the longer race was designated the “Ted Tweed 10 Mile”. As a member of the Waunakee Lions Club, American Legion, and Optimists Club he served his community for years as a volunteer and in many leadership roles within the organizations. As a committed leader he served in many roles with the Boy Scouts over several decades. He took great pride in his accomplishments in leadership training, and leading backpacking trips with the scouts. As a member of the Lions Club he founded the Waunakee Health Fair to promote community health education.
