Research

Bobby Gibbs investigates how strategies for optimizing acoustic information are affected by differences in the neural encoding of sound. He combines acoustic, perceptual, and electrophysiological measures to uncover the best strategies for enhancing acoustic signals masked by noise when neural encoding is altered. Gibbs has begun incorporating data science and machine learning techniques to link temporal processing deficits in noise to encoding alterations from sub-optimal electric neural stimulation (in the case of cochlear implant recipients) and older age. His research aims to guide signal enhancement strategies using neurologically inspired models of acoustic cue utilization.
