Smiley Blanton, M.D.
1882-1966
Dr. Smiley Blanton was the first Speech Department hire in “speech hygiene” at the University of Wisconsin. He served from 1914-1924 as Director of the first university-based speech clinic in the United States, then called the “Speech and Mental Hygiene Clinic” (now the University of Wisconsin Speech and Hearing Clinic).
He was among the earliest in the USA to work in the field of speech pathology. Dr. Blanton combined his medical and psychoanalytic training to create counseling and family therapies for children and adults who stutter and who have voice and articulation problems. He worked with his wife, Margaret Blanton to write several books in the field.
