Prosem Lecture: The Neurocognitive Representation of Verbs
March 15, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Presenter: Yasmeen Faroqi-Shah, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences Faculty, Neuroscience and Cognitive Science, Language Science Center University of Maryland College Park
Topic: The Neurocognitive Representation of Verbs
Verbs form the core of a sentence, yet an understanding of their mental representation has been elusive (at least compared to nouns). This talk will present findings from bilingual speakers and individuals with post-stroke aphasia using behavioral, neuroimaging, intervention studies to uncover the neurocognitive processing of verbs. We suggest that, compared to nouns, verbs have fewer within-class semantic connections but stronger cross-language connections with their translations, and discuss implications for models of lexical representation.
