Prosem Lecture: Hormones and the Voice

February 17 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Presenter: Charles Lenell, PhD-C, CCC-SLP, Adjunct Professor & Doctoral Candidate, Predoctoral fellow, Department of Communicative Science and Disorders, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, New York University, New York University School of Medicine
Topic: Hormones and the Voice

This presentation will discuss three of my studies that evaluate the effects of hormones on the voice. After a brief overview of sexual dimorphism of the voice, I will discuss my tutorial article that highlights sex differences in the aging voice and the implications for voice therapy. The second study will be an introduction to the rat model as a unique behavioral model to evaluate sexual dimorphism of the voice. The third study is my dissertation work that evaluates the effects of estrogen on the vocal mechanism. Together this research focuses on demystifying the effects of hormones on the voice with the overall objective to prevent and treat voice disorders.
