Prosem Lecture: Voice and Upper Airway in Preterm Children
February 6 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Presenter: Victoria Reynolds, PhD, BSc(Hons), LLB, Assistant Professor, State University of New York (SUNY Plattsburgh)
Topic: Voice and Upper Airway in Preterm Children
There are a number of potential sequelae of premature birth and the intervention required to sustain life. As preterm children grow and thrive, certain conditions become more apparent. Airway dysfunction is a well-known outcome of premature birth. Attention to date has focused on the lower airway, in particular, chronic lung disease of prematurity. Upper airway sequelae, such as dysphonia, have also been documented. Yet, little is known about the interplay between the upper and lower airway. This seminar will discuss upper and lower airway function, in the context of voice outcomes of preterm children. The focus will be on children born very preterm, who constitute 2% of births, worldwide.
