Hearing and Donuts (Brain and Bagels) Seminar
November 15, 2019 @ 8:30 am - 9:30 am
Presenter: Tanvi Thakkar, Postdoctoral Fellow, Binaural Hearing and Speech Lab, Waisman Center, UW Madison
Topic: Listening Effort in Patients with Single-sided Deafness Before and After Cochlear Implantation
Patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss in one ear and normal hearing in the other, known as single-sided deafness (SSD), have recently opted to obtain a cochlear implant (CI) in their deaf ear. Little is known about how a CI and a normal hearing ear impact a listener’s ability to perceptually separate concurrent talkers originating from different spatial locations. Listening with one ear can be taxing, resulting in increased levels of listening effort in noisy situations. This talk investigates the impact of cochlear implantation, both on performance and effort, in patients with SSD.
