Hearing and Donuts (Brain and Bagels) Seminar
October 25, 2019 @ 8:30 am - 9:30 am
Presenter: Phil Smith, Professor, Neuroscience, UW Madison
Topic: In An Octopus’s Garden with You
Brainstem auditory circuitry is the site of some remarkable cellular modifications that permit certain cell types to utilize and enhance auditory temporal cues vital for many critical monaural and binaural auditory functions. Octopus cells in the cochlear nucleus are possibly the most remarkable of them all. Unfortunately the only intracellular recordings from these cells has been in brain slices where no ears are available to stimulate. I’ll give a quick review of our recent findings on in vivo data from these cells in the anesthetized gerbil.
