Hearing and Donuts (Brain and Bagels) Seminar

April 1, 2022 @ 8:30 am - 9:30 am

Presenter: Zarmeen Zahid; Ph.D. Candidate in Neuroscience, Banks and Wenthur Labs, UW Madison – Neuroscience Training Program
Topic: Elucidating the Neural Mechanisms of Classical Psychedelic Action: From Circuit to Behavior

Clinical investigations have demonstrated their rapid and long-lasting efficacy in the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorder. Despite these results, the underlying mechanism by which they exert these benefits remain unknown. The pro-neuroplastic effects of psychedelics likely play a role in their therapeutic effects, but it is unclear whether this plasticity directly relates to behavioral outcomes. Using in vivo electrophysiology and behavior in mice my work from the Banks and Wenthur labs demonstrate an increase in acute plasticity in the medial prefrontal cortex in response to classical psychedelic administration. Further, we show that these circuit level changes occur at concurrent a time scale to observed behavioral changes as seen through assays of behavioral threat response.
