Hearing and Donuts (Brain and Bagels) Seminar
November 19, 2021 @ 8:30 am - 9:30 am
Presenter: Timothy Griffiths, PhD, Professor of Cognitive Neurology, Newcastle University UK; Honorary Professor, University College London, UK; Adjunct Professor, Iowa University, USA
Topic: The Relationship Between Hearing Loss and Dementia
Hearing loss in middle life is established as a risk factor for dementia . I will consider how altered cortical mechanisms for listening due to hearing impairment might interact with dementia pathology . Ongoing work in the Iowa CI programme addresses whether hearing intervention restores cortical listening mechanisms. Future studies are required to consider whether such hearing interventions interact with early molecular mechanisms for dementia.
