Hearing and Donuts (Brain and Bagels) Seminar
March 5, 2021 @ 8:30 am - 9:30 am
Presenter: Anahita Mehta, Ph.D., Research Associate, Auditory Perception and Cognition Lab, Department of Psychology, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
Topic: The role of temporal integration and harmonicity in pitch perception
Pitch and harmonicity play a defining role in the perception of speech and music, and are crucial for the perceptual organization of sounds in an auditory scene. Despite advances in our understanding of how pitch is perceived, coded, and represented in our auditory system, there are still significant gaps in our basic understanding of how harmonicity and temporal integration affect pitch perception. I will describe a series of behavioral experiments using a novel stimulus that produces an illusory virtual pitch percept, to provide empirical data for quantifying the parameters governing temporal integration in the perception of pitch. I will also highlight how we can use this stimulus in neuroimaging experiments to dissociate different representations of pitch in auditory cortex.
