Research Statement

Dr. Rountrey’s research interests focus on the measurement of intelligibility and acoustics in natural environments and in spontaneous speech. She is currently exploring the effects of environment, task and treatment on speech and voice in Parkinson’s Disease and healthy volunteers. Her natural environment studies compare function, intelligibility and acoustic correlates between the home and the clinic. In Parkinson’s Disease and other neurologic disorders that cause speech impairment, much is to be gained from assessing the functional environments where speech occurs for communicative purposes, and much is to be learned about methods of measurement to this end. Dr. Rountrey hopes that developing ways to measure functional communication in natural environments will lend insight to assessment of speech disorders as well as methods for measuring generalization of skills from the clinic to the home.
